FAQ

How many events do you host per year?

We host 4 funwalks, 2 shows and a number of other events per year. Whether you already own a Samoyed, want to get into showing, or just want to learn more about the breed, we’d love to have you. Follow us on Facebook to keep an eye on upcoming events.

Can I come if I don’t have a Samoyed?

Of course! Our events, especially funwalks, are the perfect opportunity for would-be Samoyed owners to meet lots of dogs, ask questions of their owners, and meet local breeders.

Is there a charge to come to an event?

We would love it if you’d consider becoming a member. We keep prices low to make our club as accessible to as many people as possible. Membership ensures we’re able to continue to do what we do.

Do you know where I can buy a puppy?

We only support the sale of Dogs NZ registered puppies. There are multiple reasons for this:

  1. Health and Genetic Testing: Registered breeders often prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs. They conduct thorough health screenings and genetic testing to minimize the risk of inherited diseases or conditions. This ensures that the puppies you buy are less likely to have serious health issues.
  2. Breed Standards: Registered breeders adhere to specific breed standards set by kennel clubs or breed associations. They breed dogs with desirable traits and characteristics, maintaining the integrity of the breed. This means you’re more likely to get a dog that matches the breed’s expected temperament, appearance, and abilities.
  3. Responsible Breeding Practices: Registered breeders typically follow responsible breeding practices. They carefully select breeding pairs, taking into account genetic diversity and compatibility. They also provide appropriate socialization and care for their puppies, giving them a solid foundation for a healthy and well-adjusted life.
  4. Support and Guidance: Reputable breeders often provide ongoing support and guidance to new owners. They are knowledgeable about the breed and can offer advice on training, nutrition, and general care. This support can be valuable, especially for first-time dog owners.
  5. Pedigree and Documentation: Registered breeders provide proper documentation, including pedigrees and registration papers. This proves the lineage and authenticity of your dog..

It’s worth noting that not all registered breeders are equally reputable, and it’s essential to research and choose a responsible breeder who prioritizes the health and welfare of their dogs. You can see Dogs NZ registered breeders here.

Do you know where I can buy a Samoyed Cross (Husky/Golden Retriever etc)?

APSA does not support the deliberate crossbreeding of Samoyeds. This is for a few reasons:

  1. Unpredictable Traits: Crossbreeding can lead to unpredictable traits and characteristics in offspring. Crossbred dogs vary widely in terms of appearance, size, temperament, and health, making it more difficult to determine what to expect from the offspring.
  2. Lack of Breed Standards: Crossbreeding does not have the benefit of established breed standards that guide responsible breeding practices. Breed standards help ensure that dogs meet certain criteria in terms of appearance, temperament, and working ability. Without these standards, it becomes challenging to assess the quality and consistency of crossbred dogs.
  3. Health Concerns: Crossbreeding can increase the risk of health issues. This is because purebred dogs often undergo health testing to identify and minimize genetic disorders within their specific breeds. When different breeds are mixed, the health risks associated with those breeds may combine, potentially increasing the chances of inherited health conditions.
  4. Popularity of Designer Breeds: Crossbreeding has gained popularity in recent years, leading to the rise of so-called “designer breeds” or “hybrids.” Many of these dogs are the result of backyard breeding or puppy mills seeking to profit from trendy or novelty mixes. These unscrupulous breeders may prioritize profit over the health and welfare of the dogs.
